About the Rosemary Bronder Memorial Scholarship:

The Rosemary Bronder Memorial Scholarship is a medical/health related scholarship offered to full time students planning a career in human or animal medical health fields. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist Eastern Orthodox Christians of all ages to meet their educational goals in preparation for human or animal patient health care. The Rosemary Bronder Memorial Scholarship is designed to encourage and assist young men and women to prepare themselves through accredited or certified schools offering such educational program s.

Am I eligible to apply?

The Rosemary Bronder Memorial Scholarship Committee of the Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church has determined the following scholarship guidelines:

· Applicants must be an Eastern Orthodox Christian pursuing academic degrees and/or academic certification in any field of human or animal medicine to include, but not limited to the following:

  • Medical Doctor
  • Registered Nurse
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Physicians Assistant
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
  • Support Fields which include, but not limited to the following:
    • Emergency Medical Technicians
    • Paramedical Services Technician
    • Veterinary Technicians
    • Medical Research Clinician

· Applicants must have completed all career relevant pre-requisites or general studies requirements at an accredited academic institution where studies have been directed to the specific career. For example, medical students are not eligible for the scholarship until their pre-med courses have been completed, and they have been accepted into a specific college of medicine. Nursing students are not eligible for the scholarship until their acceptance into a specific school of nursing. Applicant will be required to submit a copy of an acceptance letter from the institution of study.

· Students entering schools where studies are directed to the specific career from the first year of enrollment may apply for the scholarship on initial enrollment.

· The Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church welcomes all Orthodox Church members throughout Virginia to apply for the Rosemary Bronder Memorial Scholarship.

What is the scholarship amount?

An award amount of up to $2,000.00 will be offered annually. There may be up to three scholarships offered, totaling the amount of $2,000.00.

What is the deadline to apply?

Applicants must submit the properly completed application and all associated documentation required to be eligible for scholarship award. All submissions must be received no later than May 15thof the current year.

When will I find out if I have been awarded a scholarship?

Scholarships will be announced and awarded on an annual basis.

Scholarship award notification will be made by the Rosemary Bronder Memorial Scholarship Committee the last week of June.

Scholarship(s) will be awarded at The Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church on the last Sunday of July.

Are these scholarships taxable?

This award is to apply to direct college expenses, such as tuition, books, and fees. The recipient is responsible for any tax liability incurred as a result of this award. Monies received for tuition, fees, and books may not incur tax liability while monies applied to room and board may be considered taxable income.

If I am awarded a scholarship, do I get the check?

No, the award(s) will be made payable during the fall academic period, to the recipient’s institution, upon receipt of verification of enrollment in the health related school.

Some senior colleges do not accept students into their professional schools until the third academic year. In such circumstances, the scholarship award is held and then released to the institution upon verification of acceptance at the beginning of the third year.

If I receive a scholarship for one year, will I automatically receive that award for the following year?

No, all of the scholarships are a one year award.

If I am rewarded the scholarship, do I need to be present for the scholarship award?

The expectation is that all recipients will be present for the award presentation and ceremony in their honor at the Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Any exception to this will be reviewed on a case by case basis by the scholarship selection committee.

Scholarship Application (typed or computer generated)

Personal essay of 1,000 words or less setting forth career objectives and potential for contributing to the profession (typed). Essay must be typed in size 12 Times New Roman font.

Original transcript of high school or college grades (as applicable).

Proof of acceptance into the institution of study. Acceptance letter or other documentation provided must state:

- Verification of full time enrollment

- Anticipated graduation date

- Field of study declaration confirmation

- Copy of acceptance letter into school of study (ex: School of Nursing, School of Veterinary Medicine)

Letters of recommendation:
- Minimum of one letter (no more than two) from an academic teacher from high school or college now attending. Letter should address applicant’s ability, work habits, integrity, character, potential and volunteer activities.

- Minimum of one letter (no more than two) from an Eastern Orthodox Priest, Council Member, or parishioner in good standing, addressing the moral character of the applicant.

All letters of recommendation are to be submitted with the scholarship application in sealed envelopes with author’s signature across the seal. Parents, immediate family members, and school counselors are NOT eligible to write the letter of recommendation.

List of extra-curricular activities, honors received and scholastic achievements – Typed in size 12 Times New Roman font on one side of 8 1/2'' x 11'' paper.

Financial need form may be required for judging in the event two candidates are equally qualified. Should this be necessary, applicants will be contacted. No submission is necessary unless requested.
